Ming Yuan Restaurant in Daly City offers an authentic taste of Cantonese cuisine with an emphasis on expertly crafted dim sum and fresh seafood. Nestled at 209 Southgate Ave, this bustling eatery is a beloved destination for both locals and visitors craving classic flavors with a welcoming and lively ambiance.
The moment you step into Ming Yuan, the inviting aromas of freshly steamed dumplings and sizzling seafood fill the air, promising a feast for the senses. Their dim sum selection stands out with crowd favorites like the translucent shrimp dumplings (晶瑩蝦餃皇), crispy deep-fried meat dumplings (咸水角), and baked egg custard sweet buns (菠蘿焗奶黃包) that deliver a perfect balance of textures and rich flavors. Each bite showcases delicate craftsmanship—from the expertly wrapped fillings to the harmonious seasoning that pays homage to traditional Cantonese technique.
For those seeking heartier dishes, the menu shines with options like the cantonese style fried chicken (一品吊燒鷄), salt and pepper prawns in shells (椒鹽蝦), and the sumptuous stir-fried sea cucumber with mixed mushrooms (什菌爆海參). The seafood pan fried noodles captivate with a savory, slightly smoky finish that complements the fresh ocean flavors, while the crab meat and fish maw soup (蟹肉魚肚羹) warms the palate with its silky texture and gentle seafood essence.
Lunch diners will appreciate the variety of baked, pan-fried, and deep-fried dim sum items, including the pan-fried turnip dumpling (香煎蘿蔔糕) and French style baked BBQ pork bun (法式焗叉燒包), which perfectly fuse traditional tastes with creative twists. The chef’s recommendations, such as the pepper-flavored pig's stomach soup (胡椒豬肚湯) and supreme soy sauce chow mein (豉油皇炒麵), offer a delightful range of bold yet balanced flavors that reflect the kitchen’s dedication to quality.
Atmospherically, Ming Yuan maintains a vibrant yet cozy setting that buzzes with energy during peak hours, creating a dynamic dining experience that encourages sharing and savoring dishes with friends and family. Though the restaurant can get quite lively and busy—testament to its popularity—the attentive and friendly staff strive to ensure a smooth, pleasant visit. Patrons often recommend making reservations ahead of time to avoid wait times, especially on weekends.
Customers frequently praise the consistently generous portions and authentic tastes, noting that Ming Yuan offers excellent value compared to its more high-profile neighbors. As one regular enthusiastically put it, Ming Yuan is “like Koi Palace’s little brother” with equally delicious dim sum but shorter waits and friendlier prices. The quality of seafood dishes, freshness of ingredients, and comforting flavors keep guests returning again and again.
In summary, Ming Yuan is a must-visit for anyone eager to indulge in Cantonese classics and seafood delicacies delivered with genuine warmth and culinary expertise. Whether you are making your first discovery or returning as an aficionado, this restaurant promises a gratifying, flavorful journey deep into the heart of traditional Chinese dining.
This place may have been a hidden gem 5 years ago but everyone knows about it now because it is always packed. You can consider this koi palace's little brother the wait times are shorter and price is a bit less, but quality and flavor are still there. The usual har gows and rice rolls are always good here. They also have the tim ho wan style BBQ buns. Cant go wrong with this local dim sum spot if you're in the area. There is also plenty of parking if you're willing to walk 2 blocks from the Westlake plaza.
Been here a couple of times for dine in and take out. I remembered my first visit was during Covid where they only offered to go. The menu they had that time was great, affordable, and fulfilling. And yes back in the days this place was called King Wah which I never had the chance to visit but to just pass by. The time I came here to dine, it was a full house but waits were not long thanks to their well trained and friendly staffs. Their menu offers many authentic delicious Chinese dishes. I highly recommend coming a bit early because the parking is not the best in the area. Definitely will be back!
Their staff was pretty friendly and helpful. Their food was relatively good and priced. Main down side would be how loud it can get and the cleanliness of the restroom facilities. I would recommend making reservations whenever you plan to go here just so you don't have to wait as long in line to get seated as they're usually busy and have people already waiting in line to be seated. There's a decent amount of available parking options relatively near by.
The steam dumplings were large and delicious as usual. But the rice noodle Hong Kong style did not come with BBQ Pork which was disappointing. The crepes were very good and the shrimps were really large. And the Chinese broccoli was fresh and crunchy (excellent).
The food is good but not extraordinary. The service is very standard for Chinese restaurants. The decor also standard for this kind of restaurant. Vegan e vegetarian options if you properly look the menu and talk to your server.
This used to be King Wah. I remember coming here a few times previously for the meals after funerals. Ming Yuan did a good job with re-decorating. The big partition sliding wall in the middle is new. The restaurant was full at 11:30am on a Wednesday. Luckily there was only four of us and got a table. It was about $120 for four people. Not bad. The food tasted OK. My only complaint was, there's a photo of a seafood bird's nest on their onlinee photos, posted by them. When I showed them the photo and asked for it, there were some confusion. The nest part was not available. We instead got crispy noodles instead. We remembered the waiter guy from when he worked at another dim sum restaurant in San Mateo. He joked that it is not him if he owed us money. Service was friendly.
